At an early age, Fred Surgeon’s family noticed that he possessed a special gift which has developed into the CEO that he is today. That gift is one of Entrepreneurship. He always had a love for people and for making a difference in their lives.
As a young elementary school-aged child, Mr. Surgeon would organize work teams of 4-5 cousins to complete his assigned chores around the house. The chores consisted mainly of keeping his room clean. Remuneration took a variety of forms—monetary, a meal prepared by an adult, a slightly used toy or game. Whatever he chose was in most cases acceptable by his “work crew.”
At the age of 18, he began his first outside venture into the area of entrepreneurship with a monetary inheritance he had received from a great aunt. While a student at NC A&T State University, he launched a vending business that continued during and after his collegiate career. Two internships at ALCOA and a job position at Ernst & Young accounting firm after college graduation allowed Mr. Surgeon to decide if he wanted to work for corporate enterprise or to work for himself.
During this time, Fred Surgeon continued entrepreneurial ventures into psychiatric treatment facilities, laundromats, restaurants, real estate, home improvement and home healthcare.
Upon graduating from college, Mr. Surgeon worked for Ernst & Young accounting firm as an auditor.
He has had extensive experience working with youth who have been diagnosed with mental illness, developmental disabilities and substance abuse disorders. His leadership skills allowed him not only to work in senior administrative positions, but he was the Director of Robeson and Scotland County Public Mental Health Centers. He was in charge of all aspects of mental health, developmental disabilities and substance abuse service delivery for a two-county population of more than 175,000 citizens.
